Mercury is the planet of communication, short travels, and hands-on activities.
You will find Mercury representing other important topics such as: nerves, social media, cell phones, letters, tricksters/jesters, writers, relatives, paper, gossip, editing, journalists, court reporters, certifications, computer systems/data, and legal documents.
The planet Mercury is the 1st planet from the Sun, but the 3rd planetary body we see in a birth chart. Reminder: The Sun and Moon are not planets. They are luminaries. Mercury is the messenger planet, thriving or experiencing difficulties in all areas of communication. Language is malleable and can be easily manipulated into different meanings. For these reasons, Mercury thrives (is domicile) in the signs of Virgo and Gemini: both mutable signs. Mutability is important for this planet, as it helps Mercury switch up the style or method of communication.
Mercury & Communication
Communication is not one-size-fits-all. You talk to your parents differently from how you talk to your friends. You talk to your friends differently than you talk to your coworkers, and so on. Mercury represents the various channels of communication you will encounter in your life. For some, they are clear communicators, but people constantly misinterpret them; for others, they struggle to get the words out, depending on who they are around.
Not only is Mercury verbal communication, but it is also written communication. Mercury is associated with the hands, where we see the evolution of different languages and practices. Verbal communication is a main method of communication, but there are also people with disabilities who have to communicate too! Common uses are sign language, visual pictures, body language, and braille. There are multiple ways to communicate with others, and Mercury represents all of them! Even if you aren’t multilingual, you most likely know how to pass on a message without using your mouth. It goes to show you how much you can bend Mercury any which way.
Mercury & Jupiter
To best understand Mercury, you should take direction from the planet that opposes Mercury’s nature, which is Jupiter. Jupiter establishes the moral code, while Mercury writes it down. Jupiter calls for theories, while Mercury begs for the facts. Jupiter elaborates while Mercury condenses. Jupiter aims for mastery, while Mercury is here to learn the foundations. Mercury travels from city to city, or even state to state, while Jupiter goes from the east coast to the west coast (even out of the country). Jupiter is optimistic, while Mercury is logical. And so on, so on.
Rulership
Mercury holds domicile rulership in two signs: Virgo and Gemini. Mercury actually starts this trend of dual rulership; the Sun and Moon are domicile in only one sign because they are the luminaries and sect leaders. Mercury’s preference is Virgo because it is of a cold and dry quality. Virgo allows Mercury to slow down and assess their next steps, further enhancing the learning process. Mercury not only wants to know, but also to understand. You can catch on to topics more quickly than others, but you still need each concept broken down for you and explained in your preferred manner. Mercury gives you the foundational skills needed to survive, whether through education or everyday experiences.
Combustion
Mercury can only be 28° away from the Sun, which means it can only be a sign away from the Sun at most. Simple facts like this remind us why communication is not a smooth sailing road. Mercury is likely to be combust in many people’s birth charts, meaning there is often an overemphasis and a messy aspect to it. Even if Mercury attempts to be organized and flowing, the Sun uses its authority to overtake Mercury. Ego plays a part in conversations going south, so keep this in mind if you have a Mercury-Sun combustion.
Mercury & Sect
Mercury belongs to no sect, making it a neutral planet; however, people will place Mercury in a sect depending on its position at sunrise. If Mercury rises before the Sun, then it’s in the diurnal sect; thus, if it rises afterwards, it’s in the nocturnal sect. I do not necessarily apply this in my practice, as I personally keep Mercury neutral. All it will do for your studying is help distinguish Mercury’s characteristics more for you. Are you more outgoing, outspoken, and actively engaging /participating in activities? Then it’s probably in the day sect.
To support Mercury’s neutrality, planetary joy’s scheme places Mercury in the 1H. The 1H, our ascendant, is the only house that is completely dedicated to who you are as a person. Mercury has a natural curiosity. You come into the world not knowing anything other than your parents. From birth, you are tasked to learn and developing your characteristics and fine motor skills. Everyone starts fresh and must continue learning their foundational skills throughout their lives. You are constantly being introduced to new skills and activities in which you have to learn them from the start!
Mercury & Retrograde
Mercury is the most common planet to experience the phenomenon called “Retrograde.” Retrograde is a planet appearing to move backwards (it’s not). You have seen the headlines or Instagram posts hyping up Mercury Rx, listing everything that goes wrong during an Rx period. Mercury Rx can be a difficult time for any of the topics I listed earlier; if you’re attempting to sign a lease, take your time and review it thoroughly before rushing or being impulsive. All retrogrades call for you to do is evaluate and review the process before jumping into it headfirst. Mercury Rx is an annoying time period that isn’t as deep as people make it out to be! You do not have to avoid; just do your due diligence. My friend once told me to think of Mercury Rx (or any for that matter) as if you’re studying for a test. If you don’t study, you’re not going to do as well as you had hoped, but if you prepare for the test beforehand, reviewing the material, then you are sure to do well.
